Now that the days have shortened and the freeze-thaw cycle is imminent in Ontario, including Burlington, Niagara and the Greater Toronto Area, your hardscapes deserve some attention while the less impactful weather is still holding on.
1. Ensure Proper Drainage
Water is a hardscape’s quiet enemy in fall and winter. Pooling water behind walls, between pavers or on uneven patios means water can freeze, expand and create damage.
Upon inspection, check that water can move away from your features, the surfaces slope correctly, downspouts can run clear, and any drains or channels are unobstructed.
2. Check the Materials and Build Quality
Not all hardscape materials perform the same in an Ontario winter. Surfaces you’ll want to review include the pavers, stone or concrete blocks, edge restraints and the installation bases.
Ask whoever installed these features about the grade of materials and whether they’re rated for freeze‑thaw conditions.
3. Examine Joints, Edges and Surface Integrity
Even if your main hardscape slabs or wall faces look good, the smaller details still matter. Gaps in joint sand or any loose edges can give water a pathway to underneath the surfaces. There, it can freeze and shift your hardscapes and landscapes from below.
Walk the area and see if you can spot visible separation, bulging, or signs of erosion at the edges.
4. Assess Retaining Wall Stability and Drainage
Retaining walls handle major loads from soil, water and any freeze‑thaw pressure.
Check for tilting, cracks, bulging or softened soil behind them.
If you’re unsure, ask your previous installer if weep holes or back‑drain systems are in place and functioning so that water doesn’t build up behind the wall face and push it outward when it freezes.
5. Execute Simple Yet Winter‑Ready Care
Even a well‑built hardscape benefits from light seasonal attention.
Be sure to clear any leaves or debris to make winter survival and spring cleanup a breeze.
It’s also important to avoid any rock salt on sensitive surfaces whenever possible. If removing snow or ice from your hardscapes, gently do so without scraping or pushing too hard with your shovel or other tools.
